National Assembly speaker changes ruling

24 Jun, 2004

The Speaker National Assembly, Chaudhry Amir Hussain, on Wednesday changed his ruling to avoid embarrassment at the hands of opposition.
Opposition lawmakers desk thumping and cheers echoed in the House, as instead of saying, the ayes have it, the ayes have it, the speaker said the nays have it, the nays have it, on an expenditure demand during the cut motions.
"I make such mistakes several times during the House business. Please don't be carried away by slip of the tongue," the chair advised the opposition while reversing his ruling.
Technically speaking, if the opposition's cut motion is adopted, it signals the treasury has lost majority in the House.
Keeping this very fact in view, the treasury members turned up in large number while the number of opposition legislators was very limited during the House business.
