MMA panel to review Islamisation process

01 Jul, 2004

The Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) on Wednesday constituted a committee to investigate matters relating to the Islamisation process in the country, as the alliance reviewed its 17-point election manifesto for the first time after the general elections.
The committee was constituted after four-hour long debate on the current political situation and the MMA's role in the parliamentary party meeting of the six-party religious alliance in the committee room of the Parliament House.
Sources in the MMA told Business Recorder that the lower cadre of the alliance was critical of the policies being pursued by its leadership.
In light of the critical views, the MMA constituted a special committee to thoroughly investigate how the alliance could bring its agenda in the Parliament.
The committee, whose composition has yet to be finalised, will see how the alliance could step up its efforts towards Islamisation process in the country.
Meanwhile, talking to reporters, the MMA acting president Qazi Hussain Ahmad said that the MMA would cooperate with the government if Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain continued as Prime Minister for the rest of parliamentary term. The ousting of the Prime Minister just after two months or so would be a 'joke with democracy'.
"Jamali was forced to leave as a result of palace intrigue. And same will be the case if Shujaat were shown the door," said Qazi.
He said that the MMA was willing to implement its agenda. But the government is mainly responsible for making hurdles for the alliance in this regard, he said.
He accused that General Pervez Musharraf was not sincere in allowing the democracy to flourish in the country.
"Musharraf must stop showing his fist to the opposition. He also must stop interference in the political affairs of the country," Qazi warned.
