Six anti-narcotics courts set up

Six special courts have been established under the Narcotics Substance Act, 1997, to curb the menace of drugs abuse.
A massive drive against drugs trafficking is in operation. There has been total seizures of 125,535 kg. of drugs (opium 5,380 kg, heroine over 33,000 kg, and Hashish over 87,000 Kg, and the elimination of poppy crops.
According to the National Assessment Study on Drug Abuse in Pakistan-2000, there are about 500,000 chronic heroin users including 60,000 drug injectors in the age bracket of 15-45 years, and 40 percent of the total heroin abusers fall in the age bracket of 25-34 years, which is an alarmingly high rate by international standards.
Drug abuse is a problem of deep magnitude and with multiple dimensions with serious implications for the socio-economic well-being of the individual, family and society at large.
