Labour unions of different public and private industrial concerns on Friday held protest demonstrations at Karachi Press Club (KPC) against exploitation by their employers and demanded authorities to take notice of irregularities in their respective organisations.
Workers of Karachi Shipyard Labour Union held demonstration at KPC against delay and non-payment of salaries, arrears, provident fund and non-acceptance of their charter of demand.
Labourers were carrying banners and placards inscribed with slogans and demands against administration of their organisation and chanted slogans in favour of their demands.
Speaking on the occasion, shipyard union leader Noor Bacha Khan said administration of Karachi Shipyard was exploiting labourers while it had sacked several labour leaders for raising their voice against injustices.
He said one of the sacked labour leaders Muhammad Aslam Khan Niazi died due to unavailability of medical treatment while he was at home after being fired illegally by the administration.
Karachi Shipyard labour leader demanded administration to mend its ways and follow agreements reached between it and labour union, otherwise labourers would be compelled to launch strong protests.
Labourers working at power looms in Baldia Town also held a protest demonstration at KPC against exploitation by their employers and violation of labour laws.
They said they get no weekly off, compelled to work 12-hour daily, even they are not allowed to observe national holidays. Non-provision of overtime was another issue besides labourers have no security of jobs at these power looms, they added.
