The Suez Canal earned $247.3 million in revenue in May, compared with $248.8 million in April and $221.5 million in May 2003, according to the government's monthly Egyptian Economic Bulletin.
The number of vessels passing through the waterway rose to 1,400 in May from 1,391 in April, and from 1,301 in May 2003, data on the bulletin's Web site showed on Thursday.
The canal is an important source of foreign currency for Egypt, along with remittances from Egyptians abroad, tourism and oil exports.
