India's Dhampur Sugar Mills Ltd has bought 50,000 tonnes of raw sugar from South America, a senior company official said on Monday.
The private company has contracted the sugar at a price of $200-$225 per tonne C&F, said the official, who declined to be identified.
Half the contracted sugar had arrived, while the rest was due in about a month, he said.
Indian millers are importing sugar under tolling licences that enable them to buy raw sugar duty-free as long as they re-export it as white sugar in 18 months.
The duty on imports of raw and white sugar for consumption is 60 percent.
