Ministry of Women Development Social Welfare and Special Education has formulated a law to end Karo Kari (honour killing) with the co-ordination of Ministry of Law and Justice and Human Rights.
Secretary Women Development Ministry Dr Aleem Mehmood told Business Recorder that the draft law has been sent to the Ministry of Interior for their comments. After that, it will go to the federal cabinet for approval.
He said that in the proposed law, definition of Karo Kari will be widened and punishment will be enhanced.
Karo Kari, a social evil, has mostly victimised women. Due to Karo Kari or in the name of "honour killing" as it is known, 4,101 men and women were murdered in all provinces of Pakistan during January 1998 to December 2003. Out of the 4,101 total victims, 2,774 were women and 1,327 were men.
Dr Aleem further disclosed that "National Trust for Disabled", which is another project of the Ministry of Women Development, will print a directory giving names of the institutions of Pakistan, which are associated to the help the disabled.
He further stated that the ministry would open crisis centres for women in seven cities of the country. These centres will provide the 'shelter home' for the women who are in distress or abused.
