Partly Facetious: at least one Umra at tax-payer's expense

26 Jul, 2004

"The Chaudhry has left for Saudi Arabia."
"So! What's the big deal! All our politicians try to get in at least one Umra paid for by our tax money before they are summarily dismissed from office and since it is known when Chaudhry will be dismissed,...sorry, I mean when he will voluntarily vacate office to make way for a consensus candidate who, so far, has not held any office in the party of which he is the consensus candidate."
"Had Jamali?"
"What?"
"Had Jamali held any office in the PML?"
"I don't know but Jamali is a long time politician...and I am sure at some point in his life the PML may have attracted him, though never as much as when Musharraf was in power...though the attraction was for a short duration but I am sure Jamali would rather be a king for a day than a...a grand vizier for ever."
"He wasn't king if you remember - and neither was he the grand vizier. Besides you do understand that the PML has nothing to do with Musharraf."
"Not yet."
"Ah, here goes another conspiracy theory."
"Indeed and this one is gathering momentum by the minute."
"I don't think Musharraf will take off his uniform and pass it on to another while sitting as the President of a party that is known for back stabbers and..."
"Perhaps not but that's not the conspiracy theory I was referring to."
"What were you referring to?"
"Where has Chaudhry gone?"
"To Saudi Arabia."
"Who is there?"
"The King of Saudi Arabia!"
"Who else?"
"The rest of the royal family."
"Who else?"
"The people of Saudi Arabia!"
"Are you purposely being so dense or has it become a habit?"
"Well, to be honest I have been listening to all Bush's speeches recently."
"Ah yes, that would explain it...Nawaz Sharif is there, you silly."
"Oh, I get it - but somehow I think Chaudhry would stay away from him - I mean he doesn't fancy going into self-imposed or Musharraf imposed exile, does he?"
