Government planning to make Verisys mandatory for all departments

27 Jul, 2004

The government is planning to make mandatory online verification facility of National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) for all those public/private sector organisations which have to verify credentials of citizens in their day-to-day operations, sources told Business Recorder on Monday.
'Verisys' is a system through which particulars of a computerised national identity card (CNIC) holder can be verified.
The online verification system would help these organisations to verify authenticity of credentials of their clients/customers and detect those who hold fake CNICs or more than one card.
'Verisys' is already in place in all immigration and passport offices throughout the country and is in use by 13 commercial banks and all offices of State Bank of Pakistan (SBP). In addition, a number of other organisations are in the process of acquiring of this system.
The acquiring of the system however so far is restricted to only a few offices in the government after detection of some foreigners who managed to get CNICs while posing themselves as Pakistani.
Therefore, it has been decided to make 'Verisys' mandatory for all public and private sector agencies.
The government is currently analysing laws and required changes to ensure effective compliance to its instructions once they are issued. In this regard, the government has acquired services of legal experts and after their feedback would finalise the plan.
This technology based solution, developed by Nadra, if acquired by all the departments, will greatly help in detection of foreigners/aliens who hold fake documents of national importance, especially CNICs, and are using the same for deriving undue benefits for themselves.
The incidents of forgery and impersonation are no exception in the society with all corruption and connivance option available in the administration. However, since issuance of CNICs and a number of technology-based solutions were offered by Nadra, the incidents have come down.
Since the desired level is yet to be achieved, the government has decided to increase the use of Verisys by all departments. This will help combating the menace of fake documents especially the national identity card, sources remarked.
