27 Jul, 2004

Pakistan Automobile Auto Parts Manufacturers Association (Paapam) has demanded of the government to allow import of combined numerical control machining and production equipment, their allied tools and spare parts at zero duty as these are required now for enhanced production.
The Association has also demanded withdrawal of NTN and sales tax conditions for sale of auto parts to the local market.
In a statement the Association announced that during the current year, its 75 companies for the first time would be going abroad to exhibit their products in international exhibitions. It said that the Association was taking all necessary measures to ensure a smooth transition where its companies compete fairly with the international companies as far as the WTO is concerned.
The Association hailed the government policy rejecting the import of used vehicles. It hailed the government policy to prefer local industrial products over imports.
Last year, the members of the Association in their units manufactured components for 10,1000 cars, 2100 trucks and buses, 36,000 tractors and over 380,000 motorcycles. The demand would further enhance to 135,000 cars, 3000 trucks. 42,000 tractors and about .5 million motorcycles by the next year.
