Guddu Bihari's detention order withdrawn

27 Jul, 2004

The home department, Sindh has withdrawn order of detention issued under Maintenance of Public Order (MPO-1960) against Shahid Alam alias Guddu Bihari, Town Nazim, Orangi Town.
This was stated by Ahmed Pirzada, Additional Advocate General Sindh before a division bench of High Court of Sindh (SHC) comprising Justice Khilji Arif Hussain and Justice Gulzar Ahmed on Monday, which was seized with hearing of a constitution petition filed by Guddu challenging his detention.
AAG placed on record a notification by home secretary Sindh regarding withdrawal of the order dated July 24, 2004, The petitioner maintained that he was elected Town Nazim after elections in 2001 and was busy in development work in his town which was not to the liking of a coalition partner in present Sindh government.
Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) turned against me and by using its influence pressed the government to remove me from the office of the Town Nazim, Orangi.
The removal was declared illegal by a bench of SHC after which I was implicated into a number of false cases and when bail was granted to me in all these cases, I was detained under MPO, which is purely illegal.
Khawaja Naveed Ahmed Advocate representing the petitioner, after statement by the AAG said that petition has become anfractuous in the new circumstances. As he did not press the petition the bench disposed of the same as not pressed.
