Changes in bar act opposed

Proposed amendments to the Legal Practitioners and Bar Acts 1973, which would empower superior judges to discipline lawyers, was clearly an attempt to rein in the lawyers who have opposing constitutional changes and the establishment's intervention in the judicial working since 2002.
Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) general-secretary Hina Jilani expressed these views here on Thursday.
She further said that the proposed amendments have already met with strong opposition from lawyers' bodies, hence, it was hoped that the amendments would be withdrawn. She also called for an end to efforts to stamp out dissent.
