US stocks fell on Friday after a weak July jobs report sparked investors' fears about the strength of the US economic recovery, sending major stock indexes to new lows for the year.
Stocks most sensitive to swings in the economy fell on the employment news, with manufacturers United Technologies Corp, 3M Co and Honeywell International Ltd dragging the Dow lower.
The Dow Jones industrial average fell 116 points, or 1.16 percent, to 9,847. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was down 12 points, or 1.12 percent, at 1,069. The technology-laced Nasdaq Composite Index lost 29 points, or 1.62 percent, to 1,792.
