Islamabad and Beijing to hold anti-terror drills regularly

08 Aug, 2004

China and Pakistan have agreed to hold anti-terrorism military exercise on regular basis.
The first-ever exercise held between the two armed forces during August 3 to 6 was proved very successful in improving their counter-terrorism capabilities.
More than 200 Chinese and Pakistani elite troops participated in their first joint exercise named "Friendship -2004," held in Taxkorgan Northwest China's Uygur Autonomous Region.
The live-fire drills on the Pamirs at above 4,000 metres, involved encirclement, assault and mop-up practices, achieved "great success," said China Daily, quoting Major General Cheng Bing of the People Liberation Army.
The exercise proved the Pakistani troops had rich experience in information collection and organising combat operations, Chen said, adding each side shared successful exchanges.
Defence sources told newsmen the second such exercise would be held in Pakistan next year during the same period.
The sources hoped the exercise would give boost to bilateral co-operation in non-traditional security field and help maintain security and stability in the region.
