'Crop insurance scheme to revolutionise agri economy'

Punjab Chief Minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi has averred that crop insurance scheme would revolutionise the agriculture economy, in which the Bank of Punjab would play an active role up to the union council level.
The Chief Minister was presiding over a high-level meeting held to review the pace of implementation of crops insurance policy. Heads of Bank of Punjab and other concerned institutions attended the meeting.
Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi said in order to eliminate poverty, it is essential to build agricultural economy on strong foundations, and hoped that crops insurance policy would help farmers to play their active role in enhancing agricultural production with greater confidence.
He said a concrete strategy has been evolved to effectively implement and provide necessary information about crops insurance to the farmers.
He stated that the Punjab government is formulating long-term policies to strengthen livestock sector and to enhance production of milk and meat in the province.
He said a programme is also being evolved to extend cattle insurance to the rural community. He said the crops insurance would provide necessary protection to the farmers from the damages caused by natural calamities.
He also exhorted upon the authorities concerned to chalk out a comprehensive plan to create greater awareness about crops insurance policy so that the farming community can take effective benefit from the new scheme.
