A PIA officer accompanying, PM Shujaat's delegation, on his recent trip to Madina, was in an intoxicated state and caught by security guards, within the periphery of the Haram Sharif. This is perhaps an outcome of a culture that prevails in PIA's top management, that romanticises such behaviour.
There have been alleged reports of incidents in the past, where there has been wining, dining and the presence of a few obliging female staff members, at late night parties, that are frequented by certain top PIA executives. A few executives caught on camera by sensitive agencies, have been let off, by the management under the much abused terms of discretionary powers.
Reports of such late night parties, occurring at a farm in Chak Shahzad, are also alleged to have taken place. In such circumstances a few ladies of ill-repute have also managed to join the ranks of PIA's cabin crew. There have been numerous reports of their unacceptable behaviour, while on duty at foreign stations.
This has brought not only a bad name to PIA, but also a majority of the honourable ladies that work as stewardesses and come from respectable families.
The individual involved in the Haram Sharif incident, had a history of alcohol abuse. He was allowed to get away each time, because such behaviour was not repulsive for those in positions of authority. There have been many involved in smuggling, rape, theft, bungling and other criminal activities, who have been let off.
Travel and cargo agents involved in defrauding PIA, of billions of rupees, have not only been allowed to get away scot-free, but given fresh business contracts. As long as PIA is not cleansed of the rot, that monopolises its hierarchy, such incidents will continue to occur.
Now that it has happened, in the presence of the Prime Minister, one hopes that this would not be treated in isolation, and all those involved in financial and moral crimes, will be punished and sacked from PIA. Nisar did, what he did, because he was encouraged to do so, by an incompetent management, that lacked in moral values and corporate ethics.
