Shias most revered cleric, Grand Ayatollah Ali Sistani, was admitted to a London hospital, according to a statement Sunday from the cleric's Najaf office.
"Upon his arrival in London, Sayed (honorific) Sistani met with a medical team that advised him to enter a specialist hospital to undergo the necessary tests or procedures," said the statement without providing further details.
Sistani, 73, arrived in London Friday to treat a heart condition.
His sudden departure from his base in Najaf coincided with fierce fighting there between militia loyal to renegade Shiite cleric Moqtada Sadr and US and Iraqi forces.
