Benazir concerned over Larkana SSGC office closure

10 Aug, 2004

Former Prime Minister and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairperson Benazir Bhutto has expressed grave concern over the reports that the regional office of Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) in Larkana is being closed down.
In a statement issued on Monday, the former Prime Minister said the move would cause innumerable hardships to the consumers and asked the rulers to reverse that anti-people and anti-labour decision.
She said that the Larkana SSGC office was opened by the PPP government in 1994 to meet a long-standing demand of the consumers there.
The former Prime Minister said the closure of the SSGC office in Larkana would not only put to great inconvenience the consumers but also cause loss of employment opportunities to the people.
She said that it was the responsibility of the rulers to provide facilities and jobs to the people rather than to cut down on the facilities already provided and snatching jobs from them.
She demanded an end to the anti-people policies of the regime and called for the reinstatement of employees of the SSGC who had been sacked illegally after the dismissal of the PPP government in 1996.
It was the height of injustice that serving and retired military officers were being inducted into civil jobs while the civilians were thrown out and the offices closed down, she said.
