Rs 37.988 million for improvement of science education

The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has approved a funding of Rs 37.988 million in the departmental development working party (DDWP) to strengthen the laboratory equipment, chemicals, glassware in basic science departments of GC University here.
Dr Asif Iqbal Khan, vice-chancellor, GC University, said the HEC would provide the funds during the current financial year of the project prepared by Dr Shahid Mahboob Rana, Director, Research, GC University.
The strengthening of laboratories in the faculty of science in the university through this project will promote scientific and technological research, which will play a vital role in scientific discoveries, an essential ingredient for exploitation of scientific research potential of the country in general and needs of this industrial city in particular.
The major equipment will be made available for the faculty and students, who will not only give boost to major experimental research, but will also lead to the introduction of new disciplines such as bio-informatics, environmental sciences, industrial chemistry and biotechnology.
The Vice Chancellor said that facilities generated through this project would help improve the quality of teaching in botany, chemistry, physics and zoology in B.Sc. Honours and M.Sc.
It would also help in smooth implementation of the M.Phil and Ph.D programmes of study in different disciplines of biological sciences and physical sciences at graduate levels and introduction of new scientific disciplines at graduate and post-graduate levels, which are one of the top priorities and the main emphasis of the government's scientific education policy, he said.
