Mark-up on mark-up

19 Aug, 2004

This to inform your newspaper that the State Bank of Pakistan has miserably failed to protect the people and businesses from financial institutions especially Habib Bank Ltd and National Bank of Pakistan which do improper accounts by fictitious figures to the borrowers for mark-up on mark-up.
It is surprisingly to note that the State Bank official advised the borrowers to contact the concerned banks for relief. It is clearly wrong to contact the them for return of the amounts.
The lot of pending matters in which Habib Bank has charged mark-up on mark-up in spite of SBP warning.
The matters was referred to the State Bank and asked the Habib Bank to supply supporting documents but they did not do so. But Habib Bank placed the name of such clients without proper verification on the CIB list - no accounts were checked and therefore many textiles mills are on the defaulters list of CIB.
The State Bank recently waived a sum of Rs 25 crores to Indus Polyester Ltd and normal people are suffering a lot of hardship due to mark-up on mark-up.
It is requested that the State Bank issue clear circular to avoid the aggrieved parties to go in court of law or any other forum.
The State Bank should delete the names of the textiles mills from the defaulters' list if it does not get any supporting documents from the Habib Bank.
