US Stocks: Thursday's unofficial close

20 Aug, 2004

US stocks fell on Thursday as investor worries about high energy costs hurting corporate profits kept indexes lower after oil prices broke through $48 a barrel.
A warning from semiconductor design software maker Synopsys Inc. weighed on the technology-laden Nasdaq.
But Google Inc. was a bright spot in the market as the year's most anticipated initial public offering rose 21 percent in less than an hour after its Nasdaq debut.
The blue-chip Dow Jones industrial average was down 34.36 points, or 0.34 percent, at 10,048.79. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was off 2.27 points, or 0.21 percent, at 1,092.90. The technology-laced Nasdaq Composite Index was down 3.97 points, or 0.22 percent, at 1,827.40.
