Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (JUI) on Monday staged demonstrations in different parts of southern Punjab to condemn the custodial death of Qari Noor Mohammad.
The rallies were attended by a large number of activists of the JUI and MMA.
A demonstration was staged in front of Multan Press Club on Monday. More than 300 activists holding placards and banners, shouted slogans, "Stop killing of innocent people in the guise of al Qaeda," "Stop raids on seminaries," "Arrest the killers of Qari Noor Muhammad," "Remove interior minister," "Down with America."
Dr Mohammad Arif Khan, a local JUI leader, speaking on the occasion, said: "We are protesting against the arrests and killing of innocent people in the guise of operation against al Qaeda. We would not let the rulers conduct surprise raids on seminaries and mosques."
He said: " We also condemn the bombing on the holy city of Najaf and killing of innocent people in Iraq, damaging the shrine of Hazrat Ali (AS) and making the lives of Iraqi people miserable."
Demonstrations were also staged in Bahawalpur, Rahimyar Khan, Vehari, Sahiwal, Jhang, Bhakkar, Kotadu, Dera Ghazi Khan, Rajanpur and Leiah.
