Memon Forum urged to implement laws for socio-economic development

30 Aug, 2004

PML Senator Nisar A Memon on Sunday asked the 'Memon Professionals Forum' (MPF) to send recommendations to the government for new legislation and implement existing laws, especially pertaining to education, healthcare and creation of more jobs for the uplift of the poor.
Addressing the 7th MPF biannual conference here, he suggested that the Memon Forum, the body of prominent professionals in various fields, should constitute committees of 4 or 5 members each on important sectors to identify the problems and work out proposals for the Parliament to bring up new laws and ensure full implementation of the existing laws.
As Senator, he said, he wanted to learn about what should be the policy papers on important areas. "I see in this forum great people who can do remarkable job in their respective fields," he remarked.
Nisar said that being a Senator, he would like to outsource the Memon community's knowledge and proficiency, marked with high spirit of serving the nation, rather entire humanity, for the parliamentary business meant to heal grievances of people and ensure their socio-economic uplift.
He said he would increase his liaison with MPF for this purpose and assured them full support at all times.
On this occasion, he was conferred membership of the Forum for his services to the community.
He acknowledged that the Memon community had made big intellectual, physical and financial contributions in the creation of Pakistan and hoped that they would continue their mission with the same spirit.
He noted that there were big names from the Memon community, like Haji Abdullah Haroon, Sir Adamjee, and others who besides providing guidance and leadership to the Muslims of the subcontinent and opening their kitties for Pakistan in the pre- and post-independence periods, courted arrests to show their physical participation and allegiance with Pakistan Movement and Khilafat Tehreek.
He said that it was the Memon community which played a historical role in building the economy from rudiments and later grooming and operating it for the new-born Muslim state by setting up banks etc, and added that "Memons are reformers, educationists and philanthropists".
He hoped that MPF, through its adopted professional approach, would contribute more not only for Memons and the nation but the entire humanity.
The Senator said that eliminating poverty from the country was the number one item of the government and all socio-economic policies initiated by President Pervez Musharraf emanated from this concept.
He said macro-economic factors of the country had improved a lot over the last four years and assured that the common men soon would get the benefits.
Pakistan has tremendous resources and only right and enhanced utilisation was needed, he said.
Referring to motto of the MPF conference 'Live Healthier, Live Happier', he said that Pakistan was created to bring the Muslims of the subcontinent together where they are accorded justice at all levels so that they could live healthier and happier. They could live without fear of exploitation and they enjoy equal rights and opportunities.
Besides, he said, President Pervez Musharraf has strengthened democracy and institutions. Media also enjoy freedom and now it was the duty of the media people to act responsibly, he said.
He advised the Memon youth to excel in various professions, especially the latest fields, so that they may be recognised in the world.
He underlined the need for a change in culture and mindset of the communities.
He advised the Memon community to ensure their significant participation in the armed forces.
Nisar called upon the community to give maximum input to the government in maintaining law and order situation, mainly in the international industrial and commercial city of Karachi, which sometimes gets disrupted by hostile elements who are bent upon harming the country's economy and its image abroad.
Highlighting the importance of the slogan given by this MPF, Nisar underlined the need for preventive health measures including availability of fresh and clean potable water in the country, and said that the government was utilising all available means to fulfil this responsibility.
Senator Nisar emphasised that suburbs of the cities and rural areas from Karachi to Karakoram be focussed by government and social organisations for their uplift as the people in those areas are suffering from a lot of miseries.
Later, he went round the one-day pharmaceutical exhibition organised by MPF.
