As many as 2,872 agitational activities, including hunger strikes, demonstrations, rallies, sit-ins etc were recorded between January 1 and August 24 this year in Sindh province.
Of these, 755 activities took place in Karachi region, 1,297 in Hyderabad region and 820 in Sukkur region, a latest report compiled by Sindh Police said.
The report says that in all 943 hunger strikes were observed during this period, of which 258 took place in Karachi, 427 in Hyderabad and 133 in Sukkur.
The number of protest demonstrations was 766, of which 292 were held in Karachi, 341 in Hyderabad and 133 in Sukkur.
The number of protest processions and rallies was 794, of which 145 were held in Karachi, 335 in Hyderabad and 314 in Sukkur.
The roads were also blocked 109 times, while 15 such incidents took place in Karachi, 56 in Hyderabad and 38 in Sukkur.
The protesting people staged 97 sit-ins, of which 8 were in Karachi, 65 in Hyderabad and 24 in Sukkur. Two general strikes, two pen-down strikes and two shutter-down strikes were observed in Hyderabad while one general strike, 8 pen-down strikes and two shutters-down strikes in Sukkur were observed during eight months.
In addition to this, 114 other protest activities were recorded in all the three regions.
The factor-wise break-up of agitation showed that 249 such activities were against non-payment of arrears/salaries--102 in Karachi, 108 in Hyderabad and 39 in Sukkur; 39 against lawlessness--5 in Karachi, 7 in Hyderabad and 27 in Sukkur; 103 for reinstatement of workers--33 in Karachi, 52 in Hyderabad and 18 in Sukkur; 139 protest activities by teachers, professors and students--31 in Karachi, 76 in Hyderabad and 32 in Sukkur; 142 against Wapda/Hesco/KESC--23 in Karachi, 52 in Hyderabad and 67 in Sukkur; 47 against Nazims and councillors--8 in Karachi, 31 in Hyderabad and 8 in Sukkur; 193 against Thal canal and Kalabagh dam--32 in Karachi, 77 in Hyderabad and 84 in Sukkur; 266 against water shortage--22 in Karachi, 158 in Hyderabad and 86 in Sukkur; 269 against killing and kidnapping--98 in Karachi, 99 in Hyderabad and 72 in Sukkur; 1425 protest activities were for miscellaneous problems, of which 401 were in Karachi, 637 in Hyderabad and 387 in Sukkur.
