03 Sep, 2004

Vast potential exists for trade promotion among the South Asian Association for Regional Co-operation (Saarc) countries.
This was observed during a meeting between the visiting mission of European Union (EU) led by Economic Advisor Mireille Perrin Decorzent and Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) chairman Tariq Ikram here on Thursday.
Speaking on the occasion, Ms Decorzent said the delegation was visiting the region including Pakistan to evaluate prospects for increasing trade among Saarc countries.
She said that EU would provide financial and technical assistance in this regard and added that this could be around 5 million euros. However, final decision would be taken by the EU.
They also discussed issues of tariff and non-tariff barriers between the Saarc countries and highlighted matters relating to visas and transportation modes between the South Asian block.
The delegation will submit its report to EU after consultation with various experts and stakeholders in Pakistan.
