On taking oath, Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz had committed to select his team based on honesty and competence, having resolved to form the cabinet on merit. But he has retained as many as 21 ministers of the former cabinet, most of them not meeting the merit criterion.
The present federal cabinet is not even the old wine in a new bottle, rather the bottle is old too, to say the least.
One can understand the dilemma of the 23rd Prime Minister of Pakistan. In the words of I.K.Gujral: "People feel the Prime Minister is an authority and an authority means that you must be authoritarian...but this high office is not an office of authoritarianism."
How truly it is applicable to Pakistan these days.
