National Reconstruction Bureau (NRB) Chairman Daniyal Aziz has expressed hope the amendments in Local Government (LG) system would be made by the end of September to remove difficulties, and in that regard 90 percent work has been done while the matter of financial leakage would be solved with the help of concerned departments.
Talking to a private TV channel he said the amendments would be made with consensus.
He said 90 percent work in that connection had already been accomplished with the consensus of all the stakeholders.
In response to a question he said provincial governments had indicated some financial leakage in the system which would be removed with the help of Controller General of Accounts and the Auditor General.
Daniyal Aziz said it was for the first time in the history of the country that powers had been transferred to grassroots level.
He expressed hope that LG bodies system would further be strengthened and its efficiency would improve following those amendments.
Daniyal Aziz said Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz had also issued directives to expedite the pace of work in that regard.
The prime minister he said had shown keen interest to strengthen the system to make it more effective.
The prime minister wanted close co-ordination between local governments, MNAs and MPAs for smooth functioning of the system, he added.
When asked local representative have complained about the shortage of funds for development work he said government monitored financial position of all the district, tehsil and union councils on monthly basis.
He termed the criticism by certain quarters on LG system as unrealistic and mere propaganda.
