An Anti Terrorism Court (ATC) in Karachi on Thursday indicted Dr Akmal Waheed and his brother Dr Arshad Waheed on charges of allegedly sheltering al Qaeda and Jundullah activists, providing them funds and medical treatment.
Dr Akmal Waheed, a cardiac specialist of NICVD and Dr Arshad Waheed, an orthopaedic physician of JMPC denied the prosecution charges and claimed themselves "innocent" when it was framed against them by Judge Feroz Mehmood Bhatti who is conducting the trial in central jail Karachi.
The doctors were booked in Gulshan-e-Iqbal police station Karachi under sections 201, 212, 215, 216 and 21-C Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) read with 11-N of Anti Terrorism Act (ATA) 1997.
According to prosecution, some Jundullahs' activists, arrested in connection of corps commander motorcade attack and law enforcers killing cases, during investigation disclosed that doctors had close links with them and they were extending help by all means.
The police charged them for sheltering and financially supporting the Jundullahs' activists and medically treating its activists Shahzad Bajwa in Shan hospital, Gulshan-e-Iqbal area Karachi, who injured after attacking on ranger's van on March 19, 2004 and absconding co-accused Qasim at house of Ataur Rehman in Model Colony area Karachi who injured in corps commander motorcade attack case and did not inform police about injuring of accused and aided them.
The court after indictment of accused fixed September 14, 2004 for next hearing and directed Special Public Prosecutors to produce its witnesses for deposition.
Shaukat Hayat advocate is representing the doctors' brothers while Special Public Prosecutors Iqtedar Ali Hashmi and Maula Bux Bhatti appeared for State.
Meanwhile, the same court fixed September 16, 2004 for indictment against ten activists of Jundullah in six cases pertained to bomb blasts and law enforcers killing cases.
The charge could not be framed against the accused as counsel of two accused has not been engaged yet.
Attur Rehman alias Ibrahim, Shahzad Ahmed Bajwa, Yaqoob Saeed, Uzair Ahmed, Shoib Siddiqui, Danish Inam, Najeebullah, Khurrum Saifullah, Shahzad Mukhtar and Khalid Rao were produced before the court which is conducting the trial in central jail Karachi.
They are charged with killing five policemen at Gulistan-e-Johar police station Karachi, engineering two car bomb blasts near gate of Pakistan American Culture Centre (PACC) at Fatima Jinah Road Karachi, throwing hand grenade in front of Pakistan Bible Society in Saddar area and planting a bomb in Suzuki hi-roof, attacking on ranger's mobile van attack case in Ferozabad area Karachi, car bomb blast at car parking area of Marina Club Karachi on April 10, 2004 and killing of two policemen Shukat Ali and Nawab Ali in Saudabad area Karachi.
Mustufa Memon, Adnan Memon, Tajamul Lodhi Mohammad Mushtaq and M. R Syed advocates are representing the defence side.
