Karachi power breakdown: probe ordered

12 Sep, 2004

Federal Water and Power Minister Liaquat Ali Jatoi has taken serious note of the major electricity breakdown in Karachi on Friday and appointed federal inspector electricity for inquiry.
The inquiry officer has been directed to investigate the matter thoroughly, fix responsibility and submit the report to the minister within 15 days.
He said severe action will be taken against the persons responsible, if found negligent due to which routine commercial and business activities remained suspended for considerable time.
He directed the KESC authorities to streamline and improve the electricity transmission system on war-footing to avert any inconvenience to the people in future.
It may be mentioned here that the main extra-tension line of the KESC from the Bin Qasim Power Station broke down last Friday evening, and most parts of Karachi plunged into darkness.
On the directives of Jatoi, the KESC authorities took immediate steps and restored the power supply around midnight.
