Dr Nasim Ashraf, chairman of the National Commission for Human Development (NCHD), has said with continuity of policies, the Pakistan government has initiated vigorous measures for rapid uplift in the social and economic spheres.
While economic turn around has been attained, he said the NCHD is doing its best to make a real dent in the society by working as a role model for other organisations to emulate and follow.
He made these remarks at an 'International Circle Roundtable luncheon,' hosted by World Affairs Council (WAC) in Los Angeles on Friday evening, before a gathering of professionals and people from various walks of life.
On the occasion, he briefed the audience on the strategic importance of Pakistan, the government's commitment to root out terrorism and extremism, enforce enlightened moderation and improve the lot of the poor masses. His initial remarks followed a lively question-answer session.
He said: "Under the dynamic leadership of President General Pervez Musharraf and Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz, the country is destined to attain its glorious position in the comity of nations."
As a close ally in the war on terror, Dr Nasim Ashraf referred to the important role being played by Pakistan. He made a mention of Wana operation, and said it was in the best national interest of Pakistan to curb terrorism.
MADRESSA CURRICULUM: He said the madressa reform programme is under way, and informed the audience that
majority of the people has taken it in good stride. He said the new curricula with amalgam of subjects, like English, Mathematics and Science, was becoming popular increasingly, as the graduates from madressas were finding it possible to merge with the mainstream educational system, which also ensures better employment opportunities.
He, however, stated that the role of madressas has been misunderstood. Over the past, reputed madressas had produced highly capable and talented persons, who had contributed remarkably towards betterment of society, on the basis of capabilities of moderation and talent.
He threw light on the strategic importance of Pakistan in the fight against terrorism, as a frontline state.
In respect of economic attainments, he said all the macro-economic indicators of the country today were very strong and highly encouraging.
Dr Nasim Ashraf lauded the visionary leadership of President General Pervez Musharraf, which he said, has set the momentum for Pakistan, and added that the attainments in the sectors of economy and finance were exemplary.
He referred to good governance and devolution of power at the grass roots level, which have given a new sense of direction and confidence to the people at the district levels to shoulder responsibilities of planning and development on their own. "People at the lower strata find it possible today to engage in social uplift."
