The president of the Supreme Court Bar Association of Pakistan (SCBA) will be from the province of NWFP according to rules of the Association.
The last date for the submission of nomination papers for the SCBA elections has been fixed as September 20.
Two senior advocates of the Supreme Court belonging to NWFP - Qazi Mohammad Jamil and Zahoor Ahmed Qureshi - are in the run for the presidentship of the Association besides others.
The post of the SCBA president is given to every province of the country on turn basis set in the SCBA rules. Currently, The SCBA president is from Balochistan.
The SCBA has already completed a provisional list of 1,286 advocates from all over the country as members of the Association for the forthcoming SCBA elections-2004 scheduled be held on October 23.
According to a provisional list issued by SCBA Secretary Farooq Zaman Qureshi, a total 1,286 advocates of the Supreme Court have been enrolled as members of the Bar Association after completing all required formalities as provided in the Rules of the Association.
According to the list, 883 advocates of the Supreme Court will exercise their right of vote as members from Punjab, including 629 members from only Lahore, 155 members from Rawalpindi/Islamabad, 61 members from Multan and only 38 members from Bahawalpur.
Total members from Sindh are 244 who have been enrolled in the provisional list issued by the SCBA and 112 members have been included from NWFP. Only 47 advocates from the province of Balochistan will be able to cast their vote as per the provisional list.
SCBA President Tarig Mahmood, who is Also returning officer for SCBA elections-2004 issued a letter regarding qualification for different posts/offices of the SCBA as provided in the Rules of the Association.
The SCBA members from all over the country can take part in the SCBA elections-2004 from their respective provinces for the posts of four vice-presidents of the Association one from each province having seven years standing as an advocate of the Supreme Court.
As per rules of the Association, total seats of the Association will be 22, including one president, who will be from NWFP according to turn of the province, four vice-presidents (one from each province), one secretary, one additional secretary (only from Rawalpindi/Islamabad), one finance secretary (only from Rawalpindi/Islamabad) and 14 members of the Executive Council (at least two from each province).
The elections of the SCBA will be held on October 23, and its Executive Committee has already announced election programme, 2004 in pursuance of Rule 13 of the Rules of Supreme Court Bar Association.
The scrutiny of nomination papers, hearing of objections process and decision will be completed till September 25.
The list of candidates will he issued on September 27 after completing scrutiny and hearing process.
Appeals against acceptance and rejection of nomination papers will be filed on September 30. Hearing of appeals and decisions will he made on October 2. Withdrawal of candidature will be allowed on October 4.
The final list of candidates will be issued on October 5, and polling will be held on October 23.
Filing of objections over election will be allowed on October 26. Hearing and decision of objections and official counting will be made on October 30. However, final notification of results will be issued on the same day.
