19 Sep, 2004

Terming the conviction of Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani as punishment to Democracy, former Senator Asif Ali Zardari said that government by using such tactics would not suppress the popular voice of people for democracy.
He was talking to reporters in the premises of Accountability Court here on Saturday, where he was in connection with hearing of his application seeking permission for walk.
Accountability Court has allowed him for walk in the premises of PIMS by rejecting the prosecution plea for security problems.
Zardari condemned the conviction of Gilani and said "If provision of job to unemployed is a sin then which law protect the people who have appointed their dear ones from Pakistan Cricket Board to all government offices".
Speaker, he said is symbol of democracy and most powerful person in any democratic set up. "Gilani being speaker was lawful to provide jobs to people who were deserving jobs. Government had no objection with Gilani but he was given sentence just because of his attachment with PPP.
"Government and rulers shun their policies of suppressing and controlling the courts as it has ruined entire system of Pakistan," Zardari said and added that present regime is using all their efforts for protection of uniform of a dictator. But it will not serve their interests.
He rejected the statement of Shaukat Aziz in which he said that constitution will be amended to protect the uniform of President Musharraf.
Zardari said that his party has rejected present system and in spite of various offers they were not part of this system. "They have to go now and then and will not see any place to save them", he added.
He said that his party is ready to talk with a political government but not with a shadow and dummy government working under the shadows of a dictator.
