Karachi, which was once a city of peace, prosperity and home to a multitude of different ethnicities, living in harmony with each other, is today a city in distress. It has become hostage to a weird and egoistic man, who all his life called himself a refugee, but now proudly displays his British nationality as a trophy.
The citizens of Karachi, living on an edge, in an insecure environment, need a break. Instead they had to endure untold miseries, when those in power decided to host " arms for peace" exhibition in their unfortunate city. All major roads were blocaded, and the poor who survive on daily wages, were denied their meagre earnings.
Major trading houses suffered billions of rupees, whilst the sick and suffering could not have access to hospitals and clinics. The Pakistani establishment is devoid of humane considerations. Perhaps the fact that they owe their power not to the people's mandate makes them oblivious of their sufferings.
Political exigencies outweigh any other options, because there is contempt for rule of law in corridors of power. Even the constitution, on which the edifice of a modern State is built, has been trampled and squandered too frequently, without any fear of accountability. The members of the National and Provincial assembly have made a mockery of constitution, in order to outbid to prove their allegiance to one man, and secure ministries and kickbacks, which accrue from such offices.
The Punjab Assembly's recent resolution, which tantamount to usurping the constitution, makes us the laughing stock of this region.
