Bharakhu to get gas this year

22 Sep, 2004

Bharakhu will be provided natural gas this year with the financial assistance of Punjab, Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) managing-director Abdur Rashid Lone said on Tuesday.
Provision of gas to this neglected area of the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) has become feasible due to the initiation of gas supply project to Murree.
The project to supply natural gas to Murree will be started this year. The Punjab government would sponsor this gigantic project, he told PTV.
About 250,000 domestic connections per year were being provided across the country, out of which the SNGPL was providing 180,000 connections.
To a question, he said, gas leakage losses would be brought down from current six to five percent by the end of next year.
The country has total gas reserves of about 28 trillion cubic feet, sufficient for the 22 years.
The Inter-state Gas Systems Limited Company has been established to explore ways and means for import of natural gas from Turkmenistan, Iran and Qatar. The feasibility study in this regard will be ready by December 2004.
Responding to a question, he said natural gas prices have been linked with the prices of international crude oil and were being reviewed after every six months, he added.
