Almost 50 percent registered voters exercised their right to elect candidates of their choice in Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) annual general elections held here on Saturday.
There are 8720 registered voters, out of whom around 4260 voters (as per unofficial figures of voting) used their right to elect President and 14 'Member class' managing committee members.
The main contesting group, Businessmen Alliance (S.M.Munir Group) and Businessmen Group (Siraj Kassam Teli group) both claimed that this year members have taken more interest in KCCI elections and 4260 votes polled is a record in the history of KCCI. Both groups claiming victory in the elections. Beside male members, 100 female members from around 400 registered voters used their voting right.
Beside the two main contesting groups there were two independent candidates for presidentship and three independent candidates for member class seats. However, there was neither any banner of these candidates nor there was anybody seen canvassing for them.
Poling started at 9.30 am and continued till 6.30 pm, with a break of one hour. There was no complaint of rigging or bogus voting.
Counting of votes started at 7.30 pm and result was expected by around 1 am. At first counting of votes for managing committee member class seats was started and counting for president's seat was to follow.
