The Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industries (LCCI) has established a standing committee on media to create greater understanding between the chamber and newspapers.
LCCI senior vice-president Sohail Lashari announced this while addressing a function held in honour of newly elected members of the Council of Pakistan Newspapers Editors (CPNE), a LCCI's spokesman disclosed here on Monday.
Sohail said the importance of the press as the forth pillar of the state needed to be overemphasised. "To develop a better understanding among various stakeholders and guide the national consensus, the national press could do miracles," he added.
According to him, to go about the task of creating bridges of understanding between the business leaders and the national press, it was necessary that an exchange of ideas at editorial level be encouraged.
This meeting was in fact the curtain raiser of that initiative on the part of the chamber.
CPNE senior vice-president Zia Shahid said that media had become industry now and there was a need for better understanding between the media and the industry.
He said that electronic media had played vital role in highlighting problems of any society, therefore, the government should allow transmissions from Pakistan.
He lauded the government's plan for the establishment of Press Council and said that it was a good idea that would serve a check on the newspapers.
