Food and agriculture ministry directed to prepare special schemes

Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz on Wednesday directed the Ministry of Food and Agriculture to prepare special schemes for the promotion of livestock and poultry production.
He was reviewing the targets and goals of Ministry of Food and Agriculture at a meeting held here at the Prime Minister's House.
The Prime Minister said the Agriculture contributes 26 percent in the national economy, therefore, special emphasis should be given for its promotion as improvement in the agriculture sector would provide more jobs and increase economic activities. He said efforts should be made to increase production of rice, sugarcane and wheat as these are basic crops, which are playing important role in the economic development of the country.
Shaukat Aziz said more than 66 percent labour is also directly or indirectly associated with the Agriculture sector therefore, efforts should be made to improve production in this sector to generate more jobs. The Prime Minister also directed the Ministry of Food and Agriculture to prepare comprehensive polices to ensure that growth rate in the Agriculture sector should be more than five percent.
He said main emphasis should be on research to provide quality seeds for the crops.
