Strong wind and heavy rain whipping parts of Bangladesh, killed nine people and injured about 100, officials said on Wednesday, compounding the misery in a country already reeling from some of its most severe weather in years.
"Nine women and children drowned when a boat sank during a storm in a lake at Kaliajuri under our jurisdiction," said a police officer at Netrokona district town 360 km (225 miles) north of the capital Dhaka. The victims were returning home after attending a social function Tuesday night, he said.
At least 100 people were hurt and a similar number of homes destroyed on Tuesday in Barguna district, 330 km (210 miles) south of Dhaka, a disaster management official said. The injured were hurt in collapsing houses or by flying debris, the official said.
Heavy rain also caused some flooding in Dhaka on Wednesday.
