Stocks fell on Thursday as investors worried that oil's jump to a record $53 a barrel would hurt consumer spending and cut into corporate profits.
Pfizer Inc., Merck & Co and Johnson & Johnson pulled down the blue-chip Dow average and the Standard & Poor's 500 index.
The Dow Jones industrial average was down 62 points, or 0.60 percent, at 10,178. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was down 7 points, or 0.62 percent, at 1,135. The technology-laced Nasdaq Composite Index was down 10 points, or 0.49 percent, at 1,961.
