Rs 495 million released for madressah reform

12 Oct, 2004

The federal ministry of education has released Rs 495 million out of the total Rs 5759.395 million to provincial education departments for incorporating teaching of formal subjects in deni madaris.
Nearly 11,000 madaris would benefit from the scheme as the government intends to introduce modern subjects, like Pakistan Studies, General Science, Economics, Maths, English and Computers at primary and higher secondary level.
Federal Education Minister Senator Lieutenant General Javed Ashraf Qazi (Retd) disclosed this in a meeting with Norwegian Ambassador Janis Bjorn Kanavin here on Monday.
The minister told the envoy that all five 'Wafakul Madaris' were very much supportive and appreciative of the government's efforts to bring seminaries into mainstream of the country.
He said that the government owed too much to seminaries as they were the biggest non-governmental organisations, catering the free educational, residential and food needs of a large number of students in the country.
