A top Sri Lankan army general was arrested by the country's independent anti-graft panel here Monday on a charges of corruption, officials said.
The Independent Commission on Bribery and Corruption arrested Major General Sisira Wijesuriya and took him before a magistrate, who freed him on cash and personal bail furnished by two people.
"This is the first time that such a senior serving officer was arrested," a spokesman for the panel said, adding he had been asked to explain a large amount of wealth he had accumulated between 1997 and 2002.
