President in uniform

13 Oct, 2004

There have been statements and counter-statements on the issue of the President in uniform but the problem does not seem to have been solved. We feel that if we tackle this issue, with practical sense. We can find a way out.
We suggest, that General Pervez Musharraf, be given an extension in his Army post for initially five years or so, till this issue is resolved.
As for the President's post, we suggest that some brother of Rafiq Tarrar or similar person be given this post, for five years or so, with slight amendments in his powers.
The power of dismissal of the Prime Minister or Cabinet, or the Parliament or Senate be given to the National Security Council, and some more members from the Government and Opposition, be included, so as to give the Civilian Authorities more powers.
If the above proposal, after minor amendments is taken as the base, and necessary amendments are introduced by the support of government and the opposition (major groups), in our Constitution, the matter could be minimised and the controversy could be resolved.
Of course, the solutions are not 100% ideal, but with the passage of time, more practical and rational policies, could be followed, and with trial and error, the country can march towards better times.
