15 Oct, 2004

The Sindh police have planned special security arrangements for Ramazan to avoid any terrorist activity during Taraveeh at mosques, Imambargahs and other vicinities across the province.
Sindh Inspector General of Police Syed Kamal Shah, while reviewing stringent security measures and arrangements for Ramazan issued necessary directives to the capital city police officer, Karachi and regional police officers of Hyderabad and Sukkur at a high-level meeting, held here at central police office on Thursday.
He said extraordinary measures would be taken to prevent terrorism and ensure security at and around all mosques, Imambargahs and other vicinities where Taraveeh would be offered.
The area police have been asked to pinpoint sensitive spots and ensure strict security measures. Apart from stepped up patrolling by police on mobiles and motorcycles, police personnel in plain clothes would be deployed at sensitive places to keep a watch on the suspects.
Kamal Shah directed the town police officers (TPOs) to furnish a detailed report identifying number of mosques, Imambargahs, religious seminaries and locations where Taraveeh would be offered.
He also issued directives to TPOs, sub-divisional police officers and SHOs to review the respective Town Contingency Plan (TCP) afresh in consultation with the peaceful and law abiding area citizens and committees of mosques and Imambargahs.
He said, "It must be ensured that no vehicle be allowed to park near and around mosques and Imambargahs during Taraveeh." He asked the police officers to advice mosque and Imambargah committees to only open main entrance during Taraveeh and other prayers.

The police personnel should be properly briefed and deployed at entrances of mosques and Imambargahs along with volunteers and private security guards for taking prompt action against any suspected activity, he added.
He also directed for establishment of "Police Reporting Centres" in all the towns to avert any act of terrorism and sabotage. These reporting centres would work round-the-clock, so that the citizens could contact them in case of any suspicious activity, he added.
The police were also directed to ensure security around the diplomatic enclave, embassies, official buildings and other sensitive installations and declared security zones, besides accelerating the pace of crackdown against the anti-social and anti-state elements, particularly in slum areas of the city.
Regarding campaign against beggary, he said, special check would be maintained to combat the menace and the beggars, often appearing on roads, streets in a large number during Ramazan, would be picked up and shifted to Edhi Centre by the police mobiles.
The IGP also issued directives to DIGP traffic, capital city police, Karachi, to ensure smooth flow of traffic in the metropolis and take positive measures to prevent traffic jams, especially during Iftar hours.
