The government is likely to award the contract of Sukkur Barrage rehabilitation to Frontier Works Organisation (FWO), sources told Business Recorder.
They said that President General Pervez Musharraf has convened a meeting of Wapda, FWO, Nespak and Sindh Irrigation Department here on Monday to finalise the award.
Earlier, the meeting was scheduled for October 28 but the President changed it because of his other engagements on that day. Federal Minister for Water and Power Liaqat Ali Jatoi, who was on a visit to his constituency, has been advised to reach Islamabad to attend the meeting.
The government has doubts about the credibility of civil contractors who, according to an official, used inferior quality material on national projects like Sukkur barrage.
Wapda contractors had earlier repaired the barrage with limestone and sand which did not last long, sources said, adding that luckily there was no flood last year, otherwise the barrage might have collapsed.
According to these sources, a three-member committee is also expected to submit its recommendations to the President for the rehabilitation of Guddu barrage, which is also in some dangerous position.
