One of occupied Kashmir's top bureaucrats survived an assassination attempt on Monday when suspected freedom fighters fired at his motorcade injuring his security guard, occupation police said.
Khursheed Ganai, the divisional commissioner (administrator) for the occupied Kashmir, was travelling in a motorcade when alleged freedom fighters opened fire near Shopian town, 50 kilometres south-west of Srinagar.
Police said Ganai's security guard was injured in the attack but he himself escaped unhurt. "The bullets hit his car," a police officer said.
Ganai's security guards returned fire. Security reinforcements that reached the scene sealed off the area and launched a search operation.
Meanwhile, suspected Mujahideen hanged a woman from a tree in southern Anantnag district overnight and shot dead two more persons in the neighbouring district of Udhampur, occupation police said on Monday.
