Manufacturing sector shows improvement

The first quarter of the current year July-September 2004-05, registered a 22 percent increase in the cement production, 10 percent mill and non-mill cotton cloth and over 36 percent cars and jeeps production. While the auto sector was once again at the top of the production data, bicycle production (142,073 bicycles) dropped by 14.45 percent during the quarter.
Jeep production increased by 118 percent, while car production was increased by 35.79 percent. During the period 28,084 cars and 313 jeeps were produced. Motorcycle production increased by 52 percent, while the number of motorcycles produced during the period was 105,310.
Production of buses (423 buses) and LCVs (4118 LCVs) also registered an increase of 65.23 percent and 84.91 percent respectively. However, truck production (391 trucks) declined by 12.92 percent during the same period.
TRACTOR OUTPUT UP: Production of tractors increased significantly by 36.17 percent and a total of 9,400 tractors were produced.
Motor tyres and tubes recorded an increase of 30 percent and 11 percent respectively.
The first quarter noted a slight decline in the production of iron and steel. Pig iron production increased by 2.94 percent while that of rolled billet dropped by 24.98 percent.
The other important increase was noted in fertiliser production, which increased by 5.89 percent. The phosphatic fertiliser production increased by 178.58 percent.
Jute and goods productions increased by 5.99 percent and paper and board decreased by 1.1 percent.
