India starts luxury bus service to Pakistan

18 Nov, 2004

A gleaming Volvo bus equipped with toilets and a coffee bar rolled out on Wednesday for its first journey to Pakistan taking 41 Indian passengers on a never before, 536km luxury ride across the border. An official of Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) said Volvo, deployed for the first time on Delhi-Lahore route, has the facilities similar to luxury trains without any additional cost. Tickets were priced at Rs 1,250 for adults and Rs 833 for children below 12. A DTC spokesperson said the Delhi government had procured one Volvo bus with the possibility of four more in the coming days.
The proposal to ply these buses on Delhi-Lahore route was delayed for some time due to lack of DTC drivers equipped to run Volvos. But the problem was resolved with DTC leasing the bus and its staff, besides maintenance, from Volvo India's bus division.
