President General Pervez Musharraf on Tuesday stressed that resolution of disputes was important for enhancing economic co-operation in the region. He was talking to the commerce ministers of South Asian countries, who called on him. They were accompanied by Saarc Secretary General Q.A.M.A. Rahim.
The commerce ministers of the 7-member regional grouping are currently in Islamabad to participate in the 4th Saarc Ministerial Conference.
The President welcomed the visiting dignitaries and assured them of Pakistan's full support to Saarc. He also highlighted the challenges faced by Saarc region such as poverty, illiteracy, hunger, unemployment etc.
President Musharraf emphasised the importance of intra-regional co-operation. He said the population in the region was growing rapidly and millions of jobs required to be created every year. Trade among Saarc countries can help meet the requirement, he added.
He highlighted the tremendous potential for tourism in South Asia and suggested an idea of tour package for the region.
The Saarc secretary general and visiting ministers appreciated Pakistan's role in rejuvenating Saarc. They conveyed their gratitude for the hospitality provided to them during their visit to Pakistan.
