Reservoir talks collapse

28 Nov, 2004

Weeklong Technical Committee meeting on Water Resources on Saturday failed to develop consensus on the issue of water availability for the future reservoirs. It will now meet at the end of December. Sources said that water availability for new reservoirs was the main issue, which hindered the finalisation of interim report on construction of new reservoirs.
The meeting of the Technical Committee on water resources started here on November 22 and ended on Saturday.
Talking to newsmen, Technical Committee chairman A N G Abbasi said that during the six-day meeting "we heard and pondered over the presentation of Irsa and Wapda and discussed in detail provincial stand on the issue of water availability, filling of the reservoirs etc".
He said that the committee decided to meet by the end of December to present its final report, in place of an interim report.
Asked that on how many points out of the 10-point terms of reference consensus was developed, he said that it would be premature to disclose them.
Abbasi also avoided to state whether consensus had been developed on water availability issue or not.
