Fresh curfew in Sri Lanka town as toll mounts

01 Dec, 2004

Sri Lankan authorities reimposed a curfew in this north-eastern port town Tuesday after a second man was reported killed following clashes between government supporters and rebels, police said. The body of a van driver who was attacked Monday allegedly by sympathisers of Tamil Tiger rebels was discovered on Tuesday, a day after a bus passenger was killed in a grenade attack blamed on Tiger rebels, police said.
A spokesman said a night curfew was slapped in Trincomalee amid fresh tension following the discovery of the van driver's body.
Police and heavily-armed troops patrolled the town where Tiger sympathisers and pro-government activists from the majority Sinhalese community have been clashing since the weekend.
